Split or Cracked Tooth

Split tooth: a crack that extends from the surface of your tooth to the gum line. This fracture causes your tooth to split into two pieces. Vertical root fracture: Cracks that begin beneath the gum line and travel toward the biting surface of the tooth.

Vertical Root Fractures may not cause symptoms unless your tooth becomes infected.

If you experience pain when chewing, temperature sensitivity, or the release of biting pressure, you may be suffering from a Cracked Tooth. The pain caused by these symptoms may come and go, making it difficult to diagnose.

What causes a Split or Cracked, and what can I do?

If you have a Split or Cracked Tooth, chewing may irritate the cracked pieces. This can irritate the pulp of your tooth, which contains nerve endings and blood vessels.

When you relax your biting pressure, something similar happens. The sudden release of pressure causes the crack to close quickly, resulting in sharp pain.

The pulp within your tooth will eventually become damaged, causing pain even when you are not chewing. If the problem is not addressed, the cracks in your teeth can cause infection of the pulp tissue, which can then spread to the bone and gums surrounding your tooth. infected.

Types of Cracks

Craze Lines

Depending on the type of Crack that develops in your tooth, we may recommend different procedures. Certain types may be of no concern, while others will need treatment to be corrected.

Fractured Cusp

A fracture can occur when the cusp of your tooth (the raised points) becomes weakened. The cusp may be removed by your dentist or it may fall off on its own. A root canal is not required because a fractured cusp rarely causes pulp damage within your tooth. To correct the issue, your dentist will most likely restore your tooth with a full crown.

Cracked Tooth

A Cracked Tooth will have a crack that extends from the chewing surface and migrates toward the root. The crack may sometimes extend below the gum line or even into the root.

It is common for your tooth pulp to be damaged, in which case a root canal is usually required. Early detection of a cracked tooth is critical because the crack will worsen if not treated and may result in tooth loss.

Split Tooth

A Split Tooth is typically the result of an untreated cracked tooth. A split tooth is likely if your cracked tooth has distinct “segments.” If your tooth has split, it cannot be saved whole; however, a portion of your tooth may be saved through Endodontics Treatment.

Fracture of the Vertical Root

A Vertical Root Fracture extends from the root of your tooth to the chewing surface. This type of fracture may go unnoticed because it can develop without symptoms.

A portion of your tooth can sometimes be saved by removing the fractured root during surgery. If that is not an option, your tooth must be extracted.
